1. The karst region in Sichuan involves 10 cities (prefectures) and 46 counties (cities and regions). In 2010, its total population hit 17.185 million, among which the agricultural population took up 14.359 million, which is 83.6% of the regional total. Its population density is 164 persons/km2. It accommodates 20 minority group counties, involving more than 30 minority groups like Yi, Tibet, Miao and Tujia, and a population of 2.717 million.
2. By 2010, the province-wide desertified land area hit 17.3716 million ha, taking up 35.8% of the total provincial land area. The total population hit 19.185 million, among which the agricultural population hit 15.257 million. The total output value of township-level agriculture hit 65.551 billion yuan, among which the animal husbandry took up 33.7 billion yuan and the forestry 4.531 billion yuan. In the desertified land area, the economic and social development, the science, education, culture and health undertakings as well as the public life are relatively backward, the primary industry taking up a high proportion, the regional economy having a fairly limited capacity to support ecological construction.
II. Economic development
In 2010, Sichuan achieved the regional GDP of 1.68986 trillion yuan, increasing by 15.1% compared to the last year; the growth rate is 0.6% higher than the last year. Specifically speaking, the primary industry achieved additional 248.3 billion yuan, up 4.4%; the secondary industry achieved additional 856.52 billion yuan, up 22%; the tertiary industry achieved additional 585.04 billion yuan, up 10%. The contribution rate of the three industries to economic growth were respectively 4%, 71% and 25%. The structure of the three industries changed from 15.8：47.4：36.8 in the last year to 14.7∶50.7∶34.6.
