Share the Beauty of Traditional Chinese Calligraphy and Painting with the World
—A brief discussion on similarities and differences between traditional Chinese landscape painting and western landscape painting as well as mutual influences
(Due to disparities in geographical region and cultural background, eastern painting and western painting reflect different aesthetic standards and thus have different manifestation and visual effects. The difference comparison between the two is a broad concept which still attracts academic discussions and disputes. For the textual length limitation, this paper carries out its discussions only within a very small selected scope.)
I. Common point
Common point between traditional Chinese landscape painting and western landscape painting: Natural beauty is the foundation.
Both have basically same manifested object, namely, objective landscapes like mountains and rivers in nature on which mankind survives. People have a special feeling for nature and manifest its magnificence, vigor and various landscapes through painting. To anchor their knowledge, understanding and sensations of natural beauty on such paintings and to reflect the harmony between human beings and nature are the shared goal pursued by the domestic and foreign artists.
Both emphasize natural beauty. For either western landscape painting or Chinese ancient landscape painting, natural beauty is the cornerstone of artistic manifestation by painters. Although there are significant differences in artistic philosophy, rules, language and tendency, both invariably pursue natural beauty.
